About Swasraya Special School
The history of our school dates back to 1991 when our principal & Director, Mrs. Shanta Menon, settled down in Thrissur and decided to begin a vocational center, for the hearing impaired at her residence, under the name of DARE (Developmental Activities in Rehabilitative Education) in June 1991. The ten years of experience in the field of special education from REACH (Society for Remedial Education Assessment Counseling Handicapped) located at 18/2/A/3,Uday Sankar Sarani, Golf Green,Kolkata-700095, a society ,,which has been doing yeoman service in the field of special Education & Vocational Training at Kolkata under the guidance of the Executive Director Dr.(Mrs.)Purobie Bose ,proved invaluable.

Mrs. Shanta Menon started work at REACH, Kolkata to train in the care and development of children with disabilities. Her experience, coupled with training courses she attended In the UK and USA, gave her the foundation to start something similar in Thrissur in 1991. From those early days when the school was based in her home to SWASRAYA’s stature today as an established and widely recognized institution, has been a long and challenging journey and a testimony to Mrs. Shanta Menon’s indomitable will and perseverance. Work was required on many fronts building awareness,obtaining funding, finding qualified staff,
setting up an independent institution and the administrative support for it and creating

Founding of 'REACH SWASRAYA', a school for special needs children in Thrissur.

- Foundation stone of new building at Kuttur was laid by Sri. R. K. Krishnakumar, Vice Chairman of Tata Tea ltd.
2001
Moved into new building at Kuttur with a student count of 65.
2002
Mrs. Usha Pattabhiraman, Managing Partner of Leo Enterprises gets involved in the activities of Swasraya & has remained a part of the Swasraya family till date.
2006
Separate vocational training centre Nishta, set up close to main school with the help of the District Panchayat.

Mrs. Shanta Menon was appointed by the National Trust as the Convenor of the Local Level Committee with the District Collector as the Chairperson to handle the Legal Guardianship issues of the Differently-abled.
2016
2016 Swasraya completes 25 years of service and was registered as an Independent Charitable Trust.
